Tom for Bio -01

Tom Serjeant

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Tom’s career has taken him all over the world, from Labrador to the United Kingdom (UK), and from Australia to South Africa where he currently resides.  Tom’s experience in the aviation and construction industries and his strong business sense allow him to facilitate business opportunities for South African companies with stakeholders across the world.

He began his professional life as a bush pilot in both Québec and Labrador, followed by his entry into the construction sector as an intern at George Wimpey plc in the UK.  His passion for both the aviation and construction industries has given him the opportunity to hold a variety of positions worldwide.  Tom has worked for Borini Prono building roads through the West African rain forest; he has helped to design and test aircrafts such as the PL-12 Transavia Airtruk.  He has worked as a representative for Siai Marchetti selling the SF-260 to militaries across the globe, as well as for Scottish Aviation selling the B122 Bulldog to air forces in Africa.

Motivated by the mining construction boom in Australia, Tom was a founding partner of Steel and Concrete Australia.  The firm provided design and construction services, including civil engineering, to BHP Billiton Ltd., Mount Isa Mines and Western Mining Corporation.  Following this, Tom purchased Polera Construction South Africa (Polera) where he also served on the board of directors.  Polera specialized in the construction of high-rise (slipform) buildings in addition to schools, universities and other public infrastructure.  Finally, following the sale of George Wimpey plc’s South African interests, Serjeant served as managing director of Wimpey Homes.

Tom, an accomplished aerobatic pilot, has volunteered with the Stellenbosch Flying Club introducing disadvantaged children to aviation.  In addition to his time in the air, Tom enjoys sailing the waters around Cape Town.
